I just got back from a short trip to Pittsburgh to see Dr. Randy Pausch give a lecture. I worked in Randy’s user interface and virtual reality research lab at UVa. I learned more than I could ever describe under Randy’s wing, all of which has served me well both professionally and personally. Carolee said today “We are where we are today thanks to Randy.” I don’t think that’s an understatement.
Yesterday’s lecture was the last lecture Randy will ever give. He has been fighting pancreatic cancer for a little over a year, and it is now considered conclusively terminal. He has a few months left of good health, which he will devote to his family. He spoke on how to go about accomplishing your childhood dreams. It was a fantastic, profoundly memorable talk.
I can’t yet put into words the feelings I’m experiencing. I can start by saying that yesterday was the most wonderful and difficult day I’ve experienced in a long, long time. So many old friends mixed with so much emotion.
I’m sure I’ll revisit this topic again soon. In the meanwhile, take a peek at the local newspaper’s coverage of the lecture. Once I have my hands on a full version, I’ll link to it.
